The Social Sector And Its Complex Challenges Require Innovative Solutions.

Given the magnitude of social issues facing our country, we need bright, passionate, empathetic individuals to take a deep dive into understanding these problems and devoting themselves to solving them. Insights into the self to understand the reasons behind doing the same would go a long way in ensuring longevity, effectiveness and personal happiness.

Custom designed for professionals to maximise growth in minimum time

This is a 1 year full time management and leadership programme for the social sector. It has been conceived with the objective of developing passionate, committed, professional leaders and managers for this space. It serves the same purpose that an MBA programme does for the corporate sector.

Business Management has been developed on principles derived from the Industrial Revolution and the idea of Capitalism – its main focus is on profit and financial growth. The Development Sector focuses on improving the lives of the underserved and solving social issues facing society.

Given the difference in reasons for existence, overall goals and motives, the way both these sectors look at human beings, the kind of culture and structure that is needed in business organisations versus social organisations etc., the Development sector needs its own mantra of leadership and management which is grounded in the reality of this sector. That’s why a Development Management programme is very different from a Business Management programme (MBA).

This is a 49 week full time programme split into 8 terms – 6 classroom terms (40 weeks) and 2 field terms (9weeks), Programme starts in July and continues till June

There are 5 broad themes that define this programme:

  • Understanding Development – What is development, looking at it from various lenses (social, economic, environment, gender, human rights etc.), how has the idea of development evolved over time, who’s development, who decides development etc.
  • Understanding the Self – Who you are as an individual, what values you stand for, what are your aspirations, strengths, improvement areas etc.
  • Understanding Organisations - Understanding how to build world class social organisations with the appropriate strategy, structure, systems, process and culture
  • Understanding Interventions - Looking at design, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of appropriately design social interventions
  • Understanding Networks and Partnerships - Starting to looking at issues from a Systems and Design thinking lens and working towards creating relevant partnerships which can deliver sustainable social impact at scale

The 9 weeks on the field are split into 2 segments

  • Realising India – a 2 week district rural immersion with the objective of helping students get a sense of actual development challenges at the ground level (Happens in Term 3)
  • Residency – a 7 week problem solving internship with a partner organisation where our students will work on resolving a functional issue being faced by a partner organisation.

Our students will end up joining a variety of different kinds of organisations after this programme – Domestic and International NGOs, Social and Corporate Foundations, CSR, Social Enterprises, Social Consulting Organisations etc. They will also be equipped to start their own social enterprises (for profit and not for profit). ISDM has already partnered with some of the leading organisations across the entire spectrum who have agreed to come and hire our students and provide them with residency / internship opportunities.

The main reason to join this programme is the learning that you will get. While many top sector organisations have expressed interest in hiring our students and have come to campus for the same, we don’t see ourselves as a placement organisation. We are an educational institution which offers a world class learning experience which will really help you develop yourself as an excellent leadership professional for this sector.

MSW / MA Development Programmes at TISS, APU, DSSW are more technical in nature and prepare you to work on the ground with communities, understanding their issues, evolving and implementing solutions at a local level. These enable you to become technical experts in areas like education, livelihood, health etc.

Public Policy Programmes help you to approach social issues from a policy standpoint thereby developing understanding on policy formulation, implementation, evaluation etc.

Development Studies Programmes like the ones at IDS, TISS etc. help develop really strong academic and research expertise for people who want to work on knowledge creation aspects for the sector

In contrast, The PGP-DL programme at ISDM look at developing leaders and managers for the social sector – people who can build world class social organisations with the appropriate strategy, structure, systems, process, culture, can address questions of scale and sustainability, have the ability to design, implement, evaluate and monitor programmes from a more strategic and systems thinking standpoint and the ability to build relevant collaborations and partnerships to deliver sustainable social impact at scale.

Graduates from all fields are welcome to apply for this course. The candiates should have a strong inclination to work in the social sector and should be able to speak and understand english.

The Tuition Fees for the programme is INR 500,000. We are a not for profit organisation and the programme is being offered at huge subsidy. The course is much more affordable than other Similar programmes.

In addition, there are scholarships being made available to ensure that no student loses out an opportunity to study at ISDM for financial reasons. All students who decide to stay at our Hostel will get a living grant.

The applicant can fill the scholarship coloumn in the admission form. Candidates will have to produce Relevant income certificates on the day of the personal interview.

The applicant has to fill a form online on the ISDM website in order to register. On successful completion of the Form -1 a Link to form 2 will be sent in which the applicant has to answer 2 essay type questions and fill details about Scholarship requirements and References.

Short- listed candidates will be called for a telephonic interview and a personal interview subsequently. Offers will be made to all successful candidates.

Yes, it is. The challenge in becoming a good CSR professional is not learning about the legalities and the compliance requirements, but the biggest requirement is for people who are able to bridge the gap between the CSR Committee at the board level and the field partners.

People who understand development and are able to design appropriate CSR strategies, find relevant partners and work with them in a collaborative manner based on that understanding. This programme will help do all of that.
