Development Management week - 2021
In its journey to create an entire ecosystem for Development Management, ISDM recognises that it is vital to create spaces for various stakeholders to come together to discuss, debate and ideate on this idea and develop a common vocabulary. It is with this in mind that we at ISDM have instituted 27th January to 1st February as Development Management Week that culminates with the Development Management Day on the 1st of February.
Every year, eminent practitioners from the social sector and thought leaders come together to deliberate and collaborate on various dimensions of Development Management. Talks by speakers, panel discussions and cultural events across the week help students, development professionals and academics explore the meaning, ramifications and principles of Development Management.
This year marks the 5th year of ISDM’s birth. As we continue to hold our commitment to the power of collective wisdom and co-creation, we celebrate the third Development Management Day and week with virtual events this year, adapting to the realities of the novel Coronavirus pandemic.
About the theme:
The coronavirus pandemic has impacted life and various elements of the world we live in. The world, during and post-pandemic, will see and experience a plethora of things that will change and redefine ‘normal’ for almost all of us. The post-COVID world has recognised that deep seated inequities exist in our society and these impact vulnerable communities and the systems (market, society, governance) that prevent communities to step out of these inequities.
The new normal recognises the power of collaboration between Samaj, Sarkar, and Bazaar and that when we combine forces there is an opportunity to address some of the challenges that these inequities have thrown up. The new normal recognises the potential and role of technology in overcoming existing barriers of geographies, space and cultures, which the pandemic squarely demonstrated for all of us.
Re-imagining the new normal will require focussed attention on a multitude of issues. It requires thought towards understanding how the collective forces of Samaj, Sarkar and Bazaar can create a new imagination and include the underlying principles of sustainable development goals. Social-economic-political structures that build on principles of equity rather than accumulation; co-creation rather than competition or at best partnerships; compassion rather than indifference. The clarion call from this present episteme is to shift the narrative of human centeredness to regenerative ecological integrity that allows for humans and the planet to thrive.
Time is scarce and the challenges have become more pronounced with the pandemic. It is time for leaders and managers to come together to co-create pathways to this reimagination of Society. The Development Management week, 2021 will allow us space to explore the contours of these shared visions and pathways as we embark on the journey to define how the practice of Development Management will unfold in the post-COVID world.
