This article examines the shift from narrow philanthropy to broader corporate social responsibility (CSR) engagement among Latin American firms, using data from the Alianzas development program in Guatemala. It analyzes how firms, both with established and new philanthropic programs, participated in Alianzas, demonstrating proliferation, professionalization, and partnering. The study assesses the effectiveness of CSR as a tool for poverty eradication and highlights the need for corporate governance reforms to align private interests with international development goals.
