Celebrating A Decade Of Shaping Development Leaders

Since 2016, ISDM has shaped leaders, strengthened organisations, and contributed to a sector that continues to evolve in complexity and ambition.
This is the story of how we got here and the work that continues.

WHY ISDM EXISTS

Creating Leaders For
Social Change

India’s social sector carries extraordinary ambition. It tackles some of the country’s most complex challenges—across education, health, livelihoods, climate, and equity—often with limited resources and immense urgency.

Yet the sector’s greatest constraint is rarely intent or effort. Through years of working across social purpose organisations, philanthropy, and management, ISDM’s founders recognised a deeper challenge: the absence of leadership equipped to build and sustain strong organisations at scale.

This was not an isolated gap. It was systemic—and it required a systemic response. ISDM was created to help address that challenge.

How ISDM Works

ISDM’s work is anchored in a clear commitment: to prepare leaders for organisations driving India’s social development. We pursue this through three interconnected efforts.

Leadership Development

Preparing leaders with functional expertise, managerial judgement, and ethical responsibility to lead organisations with clarity and purpose.

Advancing The Discipline Of Development Management

Integrating insights from management, social science, public policy, and lived practice to strengthen how leadership for social development is understood and taught

Ecosystem Capacity Building

Working with organisations, institutions, and networks to strengthen leadership and organisational capability beyond individual roles or tenures.

Together, these efforts enable organisations to operate with greater credibility, resilience, and impact—over time and at scale.

Our Mission

To create leaders for organisations driving India’s social development

To create leaders for organisations critical to driving India’s social development.

This mission reflects a simple but powerful idea that India’s development outcomes are shaped not only by policy or funding—but by the quality of leadership and management inside the organisations doing the work.

ISDM exists to prepare leaders who can:

  • Think systemically,
  • Act ethically,
  • Manage complexity,
  • Build organisations that endure, and
  • Create sustained impact at scale.

Our Vision

A strong and credible social sector led by professionals capable of building organisations that endure

A strong, credible, and high-impact social sector led by professionals equipped to build organisations that endure.

We envision a future where Development Management is recognised as a distinct and essential discipline for social development—one that shapes how leaders are prepared, organisations are built, and impact is sustained at scale.

In this future:

  • Social purpose organisations adopt Development Management talent and practices to build stronger, more resilient institutions.
  • Development Management shapes the next generation of CEOs and senior leaders across social purpose organisations.
  • More talented young professionals choose long-term careers in social development leadership.
  • Social purpose organisations across causes and geographies build the capability to reach scale, collectively improving the lives of 100M+ people.

ISDM’s long-term ambition is to become a world-class institution that prepares such leaders, advances the discipline of Development Management, and strengthens organisations driving India’s social development—today and for the future.

Our Values

The beliefs that shape our intent and guide our work

Equity

We build leadership spaces where dignity, access, and opportunity are non-negotiable.

We recognise structural inequality and work actively to counter it—across caste, class, gender, language, faith, sexuality, and geography. Equity shapes who gets to lead, whose voices are heard, and how institutions are built.

Compassion

We lead with humanity—towards others and ourselves.

We create learning environments that honour vulnerability, difference, and growth. Compassion at ISDM is not softness; it is the practice of listening deeply, engaging honestly, and holding complexity with care.

Courage

We choose clarity, even when it is uncomfortable.

We question assumptions, redesign what no longer serves, and express principled disagreement when needed. Courage shows up in learning, unlearning, apologising, failing, and beginning again—with integrity.

Justice

We act with responsibility, transparency, and accountability.

Justice guides how we teach, research, partner, and build institutions. We value truth, dialogue, and trust—and commit to practices that are ethical, sustainable, and rooted in democratic values.

Our Principles

How we translate our values into practice

Field-Rooted Rigor

Theory must earn its place in practice.

Our work is grounded in real organisational contexts, lived sector experience, and continuous learning from the field.

Leadership With Responsibility

Leadership is ethical, not just positional.

We prepare leaders who take responsibility for people, resources, and long-term consequences—not just short-term outcomes.

Respect For Context

Context is not a constraint; it is the starting point.

India’s development challenges are diverse and deeply contextual. We honour local realities, cultural nuance, and organisational constraints in how we teach, research, and advise.

Ethos Of Collaboration

Lasting change is built together.

We believe social change is never solitary, and that stronger systems emerge through collaboration across organisations, sectors, and disciplines.
