Zhang Ziyi and China's celebrity-philanthropy scandals

This article examines the Zhang Ziyi celebrity-philanthropy scandal in China, which emerged in 2010 when she was accused of failing to deliver on a pledge to donate to the 2008 Sichuan earthquake relief fund. The controversy, dubbed "donation-gate," sparked public criticism and a crisis of faith in celebrity philanthropy. The paper argues that, contrary to views of celebrity philanthropy as apolitical, this incident demonstrates its highly political nature in the People's Republic of China, impacting public trust and necessitating a robust response from the celebrity.
