Unlocking Philanthropic Capital for Small and Medium Non-profits: Funder Experiences & Learnings

Unlocking Philanthropic Capital for Small and Medium Non-profits: Funder Experiences & Learnings - A Summary Snapshot is a distilled version of a study that explores what enables—and constrains—philanthropic capital from reaching small and medium non-profits (SMNs) in India. At a time when many non-profits operate with limited reserves and inadequate coverage of core organisational costs, the study looks beyond funding volumes to examine the relationships, perceptions and practices that shape how funders engage with grassroots organisations.
Drawing on in-depth conversations with philanthropists and stakeholder consultations, the study finds that trust is built less through compliance alone and more through sustained engagement, transparent communication, co-created goals and a willingness to understand organisational realities. It highlights an emerging shift from transactional grantmaking towards more engaged forms of philanthropy—where funders increasingly value founder integrity, field engagement, flexible support, institutional strengthening and reporting as a tool for learning rather than surveillance.
The full study will be launched in October 2026.
