How could theory better inform practice? An investigation of the potential contribution of social innovation research literature to community philanthropy social change initiatives

This thesis investigates the often-limited contribution of academic theory to practical community philanthropy. It employs bibliometric and case-study methodologies to explore whether social innovation literature is informing meaningful, real-world impact. A comprehensive mapping of research trends is conducted to identify disconnects and thematic gaps between scholarship and practice. Focusing on the Vancouver Foundation's Systems Change grantmaking as a case study, the author explores how theory can better align with practitioner needs. The work culminates in a prototype of an artificial intelligence-driven literature review engine that enables practitioners to access and apply research more effectively in social and philanthropic initiatives.
